Oh darling, please don’t be cross with me

Even if you already had the chance to see this fantastic thriller a couple of years ago, do not hesitate to enjoy Peter Colley’s play again. The English Theatre presents an entirely new version of this “spicy” plot, featuring four wonderful actors, imported from the UK.

No doubt, Alfred Hitchcock, the late “Master of Thrill” will jealously be watching – from orbit or wherever he may be – the action on the Hamburg stage, the more so as the plot will remind him of one of the best films of this genre ever – “The House of Lady Alquist”, realised as early as 1944 and featuring Ingrid Bergman und Charles Boyer. By the way, it was not Alfred who directed this chilling story, but his great American colleague George Cukor. Sorry, Hitch! „I’LL BE BACK BEFORE MIDNIGHT“ heißt das neue (alte) Stück am English Theatre in Hamburg

Warum neues altes Stück? Dieser Thriller des britisch-kanadischen Autors und Theatermannes Peter Colley erfreut sich weltweit so großer Beliebtheit, dass auch die Bühne an der Mundsburg es bereits zum dritten Mal in ihr Programm aufgenommen hat – allerdings in sehr großen zeitlichen Abständen. Nach dieser langen Pause erschließt sich dem Zuschauer das Stück völlig neu, selbst wenn er noch die eine oder andere Szene im Kopf hat.

Eigentlich müsste diesem Thriller eine jener Warnungen an besonders zart besaitete Gemüter vorausgehen, wie wir sie aus dem Fernsehen kennen. Zumal in manchen Szenen scharf geschossen wird, und dies aus einer Jagdflinte, die dem Publikum bereits ins Auge sticht, sobald der Vorhang sich gehoben hat. Bild 1 — Unbelievable, Bet, how pornographic these Parisians are!

Do you remember Audrey Hepburn’s April in Paris, when she – the daughter of a chauffeur in Billy Wilder’s wonderful comedy “Sabrina” – is being sent to Paris to learn all about French cuisine to be later a cook at the rich Larrabee family in their luxurious home on Long Island? Good Lord, Sabrina is full of praise for the word’s most glamorous city. Come to Paris in April, she insists, when the chestnut trees in the Avenue Montaigne are in full flower, walk along the banks of the Seine and have a sun-downer in one of these marvellous places by the river. Wake up. The April in Paris as described by John Godber has nothing to do with Audrey/Sabrina’s story.

Nach der beeindruckenden Inszenierung von Shakespeares „Othello“ war am TET wieder eine Komödie fällig. Oder handelt es sich hierbei nicht eher um eine Tragikomödie? Das Stück leuchtet die deprimierende soziale Lage eines Ehepaars irgendwo in der englischen Grafschaft Yorkshire genau aus. Al, ein übergewichtiges Mitglied der englischen Arbeiterklasse, hat nicht nur seinen Job verloren, sondern auch jeglichen Mut, jemals wieder in Brot und Arbeit zu kommen. Profitbesessene Unternehmer haben ihn und seine Kollegen mit billigeren Arbeitskräften vom „Kontinent“ ausgebremst. Während Al am Anfang noch gekämpft hat, ist er inzwischen apathisch geworden und hat sein Schicksal akzeptiert. Seitdem lässt er sich hemmungslos gehen, schleicht in Schlappen und schmuddeligen Klamotten herum. Um sich irgendwie zu beschäftigen, malt er ein düsteres, stets in grau-weißen Tönen gehaltenes Bild nach dem anderen. „Othello“ by William Shakespeare – The New Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg

“Oh, bother that classical stuff!” At school, aged between 15 and 16, we preferred modern plays and despised “old stuff.” With one exception. Guess which play it was. Right – Othello! That play written by “the swan of Stratford” thrilled us youngsters, since everybody even at that young age already had their own experience of jealousy and rivalry. It goes without saying that no one among us even spent a thought on scheming like Iago, let alone killing an opponent. So far my own thoughts way back into my days as a teenage girl.

It was a wonderful idea to stage this great drama at the English Theatre which is known in town for the great variety of English and American plays. Six actors are on stage, two of them in three different roles. The stage set is elegant and simple, while the costumes reflect the fashion of the early 17^th century. Perfect.

Endlich wieder ein Shakespeare auf den Brettern der Bühne an der Mundsburg!

Und noch dazu eine Inszenierung, die von sich reden machen wird. Sechs Schauspieler, zwei gar in drei Rollen, zelebrieren jenes Stück, in dem es um Liebe, Eifersucht, verletzte männliche Eitelkeit und Rache geht. Ein allzu menschliches Drama, das – obwohl vor über vierhundert Jahren geschrieben -nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren hat.

Der Stoff zu diesem Trauerspiel ist den „Degli Hecatommithi,“ den hundert Novellen des aus Ferrara stammenden Dichters und Philosophen Giraldi Cinzio entlehnt. Die knappe Form der Novelle beeinflusst den Aufbau des Dramas. Die Ereignisse sind auf wenige Tage zusammengedrängt. Für Shakespeare untypisch ist die kleine Zahl der agierenden Personen. Die sonst bei ihm so beliebten Parallel- und Kontrastfiguren fehlen in diesem Stück. Das Publikum konzentriert sich voll und ganz auf die große Leidenschaft des Othello. Diese Leidenschaft ist die Eifersucht, ein beliebtes Motiv in den Dramen des 17. Jahrhunderts. Othello – auch der „Mohr von Venedig“ – ist ein passiver Held, der von seiner krankhaften Eifersucht und dem damit einhergehenden Misstrauen getrieben, am Ende zum Mörder wird. Schuld an dem Unheil ist der Fähnrich Jago, dem Arthur Schopenhauer in seinen Schriften die „außergewöhnliche Bosheit eines Charakters“ attestierte. Rejoice and look forward to a performance of a wonderful comedy at your favourite theatre in Hamburg! All those who never miss a play at the TET already know and love Derek Benfield, one of Britain’s foremost theatre playwrights, who not only wrote some extremely amusing comedies, but at the same time appeared himself on stage in several plays. Experts agree that he was a very gifted actor. What a pity that this man who gave so much joy to millions of people died in 2009 at the age of 83. Anyway, Derek will no be forgotten as long as his plays are performed in theatres and on TV stations worldwide. Vorweihnachtszeit ist Lustspielzeit an der Mundsburg. Das vom britischen Erfolgsautor Derek Benfield geschriebene Stück hat das Zeug zu einem Kassenschlager! Denn wer erfreut sich an trüben Wintertagen nicht an diesem temporeichen Verwirrspiel um Liebe und Täuschung, das bereits unter dem Titel „Falscher Tag – falsche Tür“ an verschiedenen deutschen Theatern Furore machte.

Der Plot selbst ist auf den ersten Blick schlicht: Sylvia, eine hübsche erfolgreiche Boutiquebesitzerin, die in einem schicken Londoner Vorort mit Blick auf einen Flusslauf – vermutlich ein Nebenarm der Themse – residiert, ist gerade von ihrem langjährigen Freund betrogen und verlassen worden. Was liegt da näher, als sich nach einem anderen Mann umzusehen. Motto: Andere Mütter haben auch schöne Söhne. Doch sie will diesmal auf Nummer sicher gehen. „Orphans“ – das neue Stück am English Theatre of Hamburg

Lieber Junge, auch du bist ein Teil des Universums

In seinem Stück „Orphans“ (Waisen) lädt der amerikanische Bühnenautor Lyle Kessler sein Publikum zu einem Trip auf der Geisterbahn ein. Die Gratwanderung zwischen freundlicher Hingabe und teilweise extremer Gewalttätigkeit lässt so manchem das anfängliche Lachen auf den Lippen gefrieren. Fest steht, dass sich keiner während der zweistündigen Vorstellung auch nur eine Sekunde langweilen wird. Offenbar war es höchste Zeit, dieses vor nicht allzu langer Zeit wieder an den Broadway zurückgekehrte Stück auf die Bühne des English Theatre zu bringen. Namhafte Schauspieler wie Albert Finney, Al Pacino und unlängst Alec Baldwin glänzten in diesem hinreißenden Drei-Personen-Stück, das erfrischend frei von jeglicher lähmenden politischen Korrektheit ist und in welchem am laufenden Band geflucht wird, was das Zeug hält. “Dangerous Obsession” – The New Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg

Warning: Be careful. Somebody in the theatre is wearing a gun and will use it as the play goes on. But relax. It takes a certain time before John Barret, a shy and polite young man in a brown suit (admirably played by Adam Lilley) will direct his weapon against his hosts. You, the audience, are safe on your seats and will not be threatened. You may, however, be shocked by the noise.

But let us start at the very beginning. We are invited into a big elegantly furnished mansion somewhere in the British “Home Countries.” It is surrounded by a lush garden, birds twitter in the trees, the sun shines. Ab sofort wird im English Theatre scharf geschossen! Selbst Zuschauer, die das Erfolgsstück des britischen Autors N.J. Crisp schon einmal gesehen haben – es lief bereits 2004 vor einem begeisterten Publikum im TET – zucken auch heute noch zusammen, wenn der offenbar von allen guten Geistern verlassene John Barrett seinen Revolver auf das Ehepaar Driscoll richtet und den beiden erschreckende Dinge vorwirft, die diese offenbar gar nicht verstehen oder nicht hinterfragen wollen. Hat der Mann, der in seinem schlecht sitzenden braunen Anzug aussieht wie der Buchhalter irgendeiner kleinen Klitsche, sich etwa in der Adresse geirrt? Her initial name is Susan. However, Susan worships writer Rita Mae Brown and therefore calls herself Rita. Frank, a middle-aged lecturer at a university in the North of England (superbly played by Tim Shoesmith) is deeply shocked by Rita’s appearance and her terrible Liverpudlian accent (Grace Alexander Scott plays brash Rita in the most charming way) when she steps into his study. Does this awfully dressed, rather vulgar young woman – skirt too short, heels too high – really think that he is willing to teach her the poems and dramas of Shakespeare, Chaucer, Fielding and other great figures of English literature? Eigentlich heißt Rita Susan. Weil sie aber für die Schriftstellerin Rita Mae Brown schwärmt, hat sie kurzerhand den Namen ihres Schriftsteller-Idols angenommen. Besonders „Rubinroter Dschungel“ hat es ihr angetan. In diesem Roman schildert die Autorin die Vita einer gewissen Molly Bolt, die sich für ein selbstbestimmtes Leben – ein Skandal in den prüden fünfziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts – entschieden hat und hoch hinaus will. Sie liest viel, bildet sich und strebt gar das Amt des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten an. Diese Absicht äußert Rita/Susan allerdings nicht, als sie das Studierzimmer von Frank betritt. Are you the new cleaning-woman for upstairs?

What a pity that Britain’s great playwright Derek Benfield is no longer with us. Most unfortunately he died in 2009 at the age of 83 years. Otherwise, we could look forward to a lot of new hilarious plays such as “Anyone for Breakfast?” that just premiered on the Mundsburg stage.

This comedy, set in Shirley und Gilbert’s country house near London has all the classic ingredients of the genre: there are numerous doors through which the actors pass to and fro, usually just missing each other or hiding from each other, thus complicating the plot. Jane, a married woman and a close friend of Shirley’s, tries to seduce young attractive Mark who is shocked by the idea to have an affair with the wife of another man.
