“The Picture of Dorian Gray” – The New Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg

You don’t look well on this portrait, Dorian

Standing ovation for this exceptional performance of Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray that just premiered at the TET. Paul Glaser and his “crew” consisting of four young actors won the hearts of the audience from the very beginning. If you expect a lavish Victorian interior with fancy objects and crystal chandeliers, you will be surprised to find a setting reduced to a staircase leading to an attic and a few pieces of furniture such as an ottoman and some chairs. You virtually feel and smell late Victorian London in all its different facets, including the fog, once called pea soup, that still in the early sixties of the last century was so compact that you only heard your neighbour’s step when he or she nearly touched you. Darkness and sombre music create an eerie atmosphere and remind you of Jack the Ripper who made Whitehall virtually a “no go area” at the time. Sure enough, dear spectator, the gloomy atmosphere makes the blood run cold in your veins.

The plot: Handsome and innocent Dorian Gray, an offspring of a wealthy English family, has his portrait made by a famous artist named Basil Hallward. During his sittings he meets the immoral aristocrat Lord Henry Wotton who is impressed by Dorian’s beauty.

“Boeing Boeing” – the new Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg

Hi, come and fly with us around the world

Congratulations – what a hilarious play! “Boeing Boeing”, masterly directed by Clifford Dean, marks another “Best of” in the long line of great performances on the stage of the English Theatre of Hamburg. How come that a plot going back to the sixties of the last century is still so popular and elicits almost thunderous applause from the audience. The answer is as simple as that: humour does not know deadlines – witty plays never get stale, no matter at what time they were written. “Boeing Boeing” perfecty reflects the European lifestyle of the “swinging sixties.” Those in the audience who still remember the feeling of liberty and the winds of change after the grey and bitter post-war years will enjoy the charm and lightness of this outstanding comedy written in French by the Swiss-born author Marc Camoletti and translated into English by Beverly Cross and Francis Evans.

„April in Paris“- the Comedy by John Godber just premiered at the English Theatre of Hamburg

Unbelievable, Bet, how pornographic these Parisians are!
Do you remember Audrey Hepburn’s April in Paris, when she – the daughter of a chauffeur in Billy Wilder’s wonderful comedy “Sabrina” – is being sent to Paris to learn all about French cuisine to be later a cook at the rich Larrabee family in their luxurious home on Long Island? Good Lord, Sabrina is full of praise for the word’s most glamorous city. Come to Paris in April, she insists, when the chestnut trees in the Avenue Montaigne are in full flower, walk along the banks of the Seine and have a sun-downer in one of these marvellous places by the river. Wake up. The April in Paris as described by John Godber has nothing to do with Audrey/Sabrina’s story.

„Othello“ by William Shakespeare – The New Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg

Are these two really buddies?
Are these two really buddies?

“Oh, bother that classical stuff!” At school, aged between 15 and 16, we preferred modern plays and despised “old stuff.” With one exception. Guess which play it was. Right – Othello! That play written by “the swan of Stratford” thrilled us youngsters, since everybody even at that young age already had their own experience of jealousy and rivalry. It goes without saying that no one among us even spent a thought on scheming like Iago, let alone killing an opponent. So far my own thoughts way back into my days as a teenage girl.

It was a wonderful idea to stage this great drama at the English Theatre which is known in town for the great variety of English and American plays. Six actors are on stage, two of them in three different roles. The stage set is elegant and simple, while the costumes reflect the fashion of the early 17th century. Perfect.

The English Theatre of Hamburg 2016 DON´T LOSE THE PLACE
Eddie, be a sport and come to the guest-room

Rejoice and look forward to a performance of a wonderful comedy at your favourite theatre in Hamburg! All those who never miss a play at the TET already know and love Derek Benfield, one of Britain’s foremost theatre playwrights, who not only wrote some extremely amusing comedies, but at the same time appeared himself on stage in several plays. Experts agree that he was a very gifted actor. What a pity that this man who gave so much joy to millions of people died in 2009 at the age of 83. Anyway, Derek will no be forgotten as long as his plays are performed in theatres and on TV stations worldwide. But now let us have a look at Sylvia and her unique idea to find the “ideal husband.” Continue reading „DON’T LOSE THE PLACE – THE NEW PLAY AT THE ENGLISH THEATRE OF HAMBURG“

The English Theatre of Hamburg 2016 DON´T LOSE THE PLACE

“Dangerous Obsession” – The New Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg

von Uta Buhr

Nice to meet you, Mr. Barrett.

Warning: Be careful. Somebody in the theatre is wearing a gun and will use it as the play goes on. But relax. It takes a certain time before John Barret, a shy and polite young man in a brown suit (admirably played by Adam Lilley) will direct his weapon against his hosts. You, the audience, are safe on your seats and will not be threatened. You may, however, be shocked by the noise.

But let us start at the very beginning. We are invited into a big elegantly furnished mansion somewhere in the British  “Home Countries.” It is surrounded by a lush garden, birds twitter in the trees, the sun shines. In that idyllic Continue reading „“Dangerous Obsession” – The New Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg“

Hallo Mr. Barrett. Was führt Sie zu uns?

„Educating Rita“ – The New Play at The English Theatre of Hamburg

Educating Rita 1
Who teaches whom?

Her initial name is Susan. However, Susan worships writer Rita Mae Brown and therefore calls herself Rita. Frank, a middle-aged lecturer at a university in the North of England (superbly played by Tim Shoesmith) is deeply shocked by Rita’s appearance and her terrible Liverpudlian accent (Grace Alexander Scott plays brash Rita in the most charming way) when she steps into his study. Does this awfully dressed, rather vulgar young woman – skirt too short, heels too high – really think that he is willing to teach her the poems and dramas of Shakespeare, Chaucer, Fielding and other great figures of English literature? Just imagine her literary taste! Her favourite book is “Rubyfruit Jungle” by Continue reading „„Educating Rita“ – The New Play at The English Theatre of Hamburg“

Educating Rita 1

„No Dinner for Sinners“ – The New Play at the English Theatre in Hamburg

By Uta Buhr

...
Guess who are the sinners

Thank you so much, Edward Taylor, for this funny play that comes along as a wonderful gift on these gray November days, the more so as the world is still paralyzed by the recent assassinations of innocent people in Paris and by other terroristic acts on our planet.

This light-hearted comedy tells us all about love and adultery, lies and prudery in our modern society. This is how it goes…. Jim Watt, a young ambitious businessman, living in a posh apartment in Chelsea, is expecting his American boss Bill McGregor and his wife Nancy for dinner. Nothing wrong with it if, yes if Bill and his spouse were Continue reading „„No Dinner for Sinners“ – The New Play at the English Theatre in Hamburg“

„Fat Pig“ – The New Play at the English Theatre of Hamburg

Bikini beauty versus fat pig

Fat people are in for a hard life in today’s society. Just look at the thin, thinner, thinnest models in women’s magazines and on posters. Isn’t it any woman’s duty to be as thin as all those skinny girls on covers and in advertising spots on TV? Little wonder that Neil LaBute, one of America’s top playwrights and screenwriters, has chosen this topic for one of his plays. This man known for his controversial opinions, who was born Detroit in 1963, is not afraid of dealing with obesity which still is a taboo in many people’s minds. Here we go. „Thrill Me“ – The Leopold & Loeb Story – A Musical Thriller at The English Theatre of Hamburg

Two „supermen“ are planning the ultimate kick

No doubt, this musical written and composed by Stephen Dolginoff is the ultimate kick for all those who go for suspense! After its premiere the New York Observer titled enthusiastically
“A brilliant, unforgettable musical. Sends chills down your spine.” The story behind the plot is an unbelievable crime committed in Chicago in 1924 by two 19-year old extremely intelligent law students. People in Chicago were shocked, shaken down to their souls by this “crime of the century”, the more so as both criminals came from wealthy and highly respected Jewish families.
